Day Five.....30 Paintings in 30 Days Challenge

It is Sunday and an "arctic front" is approaching from the west. Tomorrow night the predicted low is -4 degrees. Add to that winds gusting to 30 mph and the prediction is for wind chill as low as -50 on the mountain tops and -20 in the valleys. Time to hunker down and paint!! Today's painting is a portrait of another one of my bears. I just realized that she is the only "female" bear in my collection! Hmmm.... that gives me something to think about this evening. <grin> I really had fun painting "Miss Bear". In fact, I was enjoying myself so much, 3 hours slipped away unnoticed by the time I was finished. I've been trying to keep each painting to a limit of 2 hours, so this one was a bit "over budget". Paintings 2 and 3 - 30-in-30 Challenge

Painting was a total blast today. I was having a bit of a problem figuring out where to paint when I'm painting inside. Yesterday, I chose the "family room", near the north window. The walls are a bit dark, though, and there is a HUGE old Live Oak tree outside just outside the windows. The lack of good light was a bit of a problem. Today, after changing locations and painting under bright artificial light, it was easy to see a difference in the paintings from the two days. Yesterday's painting is quite light. Today's paintings are a bit darker. Interesting. The kitchen was my studio today. It's big enough to set my plein air easel up in a corner. There is a large florescent light fixture in the center of the ceiling, which made seeing much easier. It looks like the weather is going to stay too cold for me to paint outside comfortably for at least another week. I'm keeping an eye out for places to ...

Looking back at 30-in-30

Looking back at this year's 30-in-30 Challenge, it is pretty obvious that the palette knife was my biggest influence. It wasn't planned, but just happened along the way. I've only used a palette knife previously to mix paint, so using a knife on my paintings was a challenge. Whatever marks the palette knife makes are still a surprise to me. My palette knife is shaped a bit like a trowel. I'm using the bottom side of the knife to apply to paint to the canvas, so I can't really see what's happening. It's really fun when I pick up several variations of one color at the same time from my palette - like when the paint isn't mixed till totally blended. When that gets applied to the canvas, some beautiful marks can show up. And it gives great texture when I'm painting the grasses of the marsh. One thing I noticed about all these small paintings is that they are recognizable from across the room. You don't need to be right up on top...
